“Black Myth: Wukong” is a stand-alone action role-playing game with the theme of Journey to the West developed by Hangzhou Youke Interactive Technology Co., Ltd. and published by Zhejiang Publishing Group Digital Media Co., Ltd. It is set on “Journey to the West”, one of the four great classics of China written by Wu Chengen, and uses the story of “Journey to the West” itself as a prequel.
It tells the follow-up story of Sun Wukong who gave up his Buddhist status and triggered another expedition by the celestial court after learning the scriptures. In the game, players will play the role of “destiny” and embark on a journey to the West full of dangers and surprises in order to discover the truth of past legends. On August 20, 2024, the game officially launched on PC and PS5 platforms, and is often called “China’s first 3A game.” Three days after its release, its full-platform sales exceeded 10 million sets, breaking the historical record of games in China. On November 18, according to statistical agency VG Insights, sales of “Black Myth: Wukong” on Steam have exceeded 22 million copies, with revenue exceeding US$1.1 billion. On December 3, sales on the Steam platform exceeded 23 million, and the number of user reviews exceeded 1 million.
